Sex and the City spin-off And Just Like That devastated viewers when Carrie Bradshaw's latest shot at love with Aidan Shaw was left in turmoil after he asked for a five year break.

But Sarah Jessica Parker, who plays the beloved New Yorker, has teased John Corbett, who plays Aidan, will have a 'significant' role in the third season – despite their characters' hiatus.

The actress, 59, hinted that he will be part of Carrie's 'quest' to find herself as she made a surprise appearance at the Warner Bros Upfront event in New York City on Wednesday.

Sharing her excitement over what's in store for the HBO drama, which resumed filming in March, Parker said: 'The city continues to be this banquet of opportunity.

'We have these wonderful new cast members, who are no longer new, so there is that.

Aidan, played by John Corbett, returned to the HBO Max series in season two after the death of Carrie's husband Mr Big

'And I think that Carrie is at a point in her life when this unthinkable event happened and then she realized that life is short and now it's time to evolve and commit more so to being the relevant person she wants to be.

'So, what does that mean? And where might that take a person? And Aidan does play a somewhat significant part of that quest, so we're excited.'

Aidan returned to the fold in the second season when Carrie contacted him after the death of her husband Mr Big, played by Chris Noth.

After sending an email entitled 'hey stranger', she revealed during a lunch with Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) that the now-divorced Aidan – who was living in Virginia – would be in New York City for a meeting and had asked her for dinner on Valentine's Day.

The pair quickly reignited their relationship - but the season ended with Aidan asking Carrie if she could put the romance on hold for five years for the sake of his troubled teenage son.

He broke the devastating news as Carrie sold her beloved West Village apartment to purchase a pricey four-bedroom, three-bathroom property near Gramercy Park that could fit Aidan and his three sons when they visit from Virginia. 

'The only the thing that I love more than you is my boys,' Aidan said. 'I made a commitment to them, but I won’t lose you again. I won’t. Just give me some time.' 

The Sex and the City spinoff was renewed for a third season back in August, just days before the much-anticipated return of Kim Cattrall's iconic Sex and the City character Samantha Jones.

In a statement, Max's Head of Original Content Sarah Aubrey, said at the time: 'As we approach the highly anticipated season finale... we raise our cosmos to [showrunner] Michael Patrick King and his magnificent team of writers, producers, cast and crew who continue to charm us, 25 years later, with dynamic friendships and engaging stories.'

Showrunner Michael Patrick King said: 'We are thrilled to spend more time in the Sex and the City universe telling new stories about the lives of these relatable and aspirational characters played by these amazing actors.'

The last season also saw newly sober Miranda navigating her post-breakup relationship with the dreaded Che, played by Sara Ramirez, and Charlotte leaving behind some of her domestic duties to got back to work at a gallery.

In March, it was announced that actress Karen Pittman, who played Professor Nya Wallace on the Sex and the City spin-off, won't be returning for the new season, citing 'scheduling conflicts.'

'It has been a joy to have Karen Pittman play the smart and stunning Professor Nya Wallace on the first two seasons of And Just Like That,' a Max spokesperson told Deadline.

'As we have thoroughly enjoyed working with this dynamic actress, so too have others. Due to her commitments to two other streamer series, it has become apparent that filming three shows at once isn't possible.'

The statement concluded: 'Due to the production realities, we are disappointed to announce that scheduling conflicts will not allow us to continue with this character as part of season 3 of And Just Like That.

'Karen and Nya will be missed, and her Max family and fans will all be cheering her on in her other endeavors.'

Karen's character Nya was one of the most prominent new characters on the show.

She started out as Miranda's professor in season one, and then became her friend and roommate in season two.

Nya isn't the only new character to depart before season three, with Ramirez's Che Diaz also leaving.
